A White House statement has said Egyptian parliamentary elections have been going well so far. It added that President Barack Obama is firmly committed to democracy, irrespective of which parties would win.
“It’s unfair to assume that religious trends cannot adhere to the principles of democracy,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney, adding that the White House approves any party that respects human rights in Egypt and elsewhere.
US Ambassador Anne Patterson and the American delegation that came to witness the elections have praised the process. “Violations were minimal, given the novelty of the event,” she said.
