Terrorist attack in North Sinai kills 2 police officers, 6 recruits

Terrorist elements targeted a check point at southern al-Arish city, North Sinai, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, leading to a confrontation with police that left five of the attackers dead as well as two police officers and six recruits, according to a statement by Egypt’s Interior Ministry.

The statement added that the security forces are now hunting down the fleeing terrorists.

Since 2014, North Sinai has witnessed a growing number of terrorist attacks carried out in the Sinai Province, including various attacks on the army and the police.

This increase in terrorism followed the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi. Morsi’s party was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt subsequently banned as a terrorist group.
