Mostafa Ismail, advisor to Sudanese president and foreign affairs secretary of the ruling National Conference Party, vowed that his party would respect the results of the upcoming south Sudan referendum if the referendum is held in an impartial and transparent manner.
On 9 January, southerners will decide whether to secede from or unite with Sudan.
Ismail told reporters on Saturday that the party is currently discussing post-referendum issues in order to strengthen ties with the new state in the event of secession.
Steps taken towards peace in Darfur will continue, confirmed Ismail, adding that the government is keen on achieving peace there as soon as possible.
