School supplies soar in price just before Egypt’s academic year begins

Days before the start of Egypt’s 2023-2024 academic year, the prices of school supplies such as books have soared significantly compared to last year.

The prices of supplies at some stationaries in downtown Cairo saw an average increase from between 30 percent to 50 percent, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

However, the head of the Office Supplies Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce Ahmed Abu-Gabal denied that there was a significant increase in the prices of school supplies this year, explaining that it did not exceed over 10 percent compared to 2022.

The government announced the opening of the “Ahlan Madares” (Welcome Schools) exhibition series nationwide, having already opened in some governorates in late August.

The “Ahlan Madares” exhibition will launch in Cairo on September 15, coinciding with the approaching start of the new academic year 2023-2024.

The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has agreed with the Office Supplies Division at Federation of the Egyptian Chambers of Commerce to provide school supplies at reduced prices to students and parents within the exhibition.

The Ministry of Interior also announced the launch of the 24th phase of the “Kolena Wahed” (We Are All One) initiative to offer goods at reduced prices to consumers, starting on Thursday for a month, on the occasion of the approaching start of the new academic year.
