Report: Poor security response to Eid harassment

A report by anti-harassment activists has rated security forces’ cooperation in following up on sexual harassment complaints at 5 percent.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Shuft Taharrush, (I Witnessed Harassment), an initiative to counter sexual harassment during Eid al-Adha, said security prevented media outlets and initiative members from reporting on the problem.

The initiative rated security responsiveness on Friday, the first day of the Eid, at three percent, which later dropped to zero percent on the second day. The report said security officers remained unresponsive towards cases reported in downtown Cairo.

The report, put the rate of security intervention on Monday, the third day, at five percent, with the security presence recording its highest rates on that day. It also revealed that some security conscripts verbally harassed girls in the Cornish al-Nil area and on the Qasr al-Nil bridge.

The initiative urged girls to report on cases of harassment without fear from negative societal perceptions of harassment victims.
