Over 3 million Egyptian unemployed, according to official report

There are 3.1 million unemployed people in Egypt, according to a report published by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The report revealed that the unemployment rate stood at 11.8 percent in the second quarter of this year, a slight drop from the figure of 11.9 percent in the first quarter.

“People who were laid off constitute 29.3 percent of the total number of the unemployed,” said CAPMAS director Abu Bakr al-Guindy on Wednesday. “Unemployment in urban areas is 19.6 percent,” he said.

“The work force is estimated at 23.3 million, of which 30.7 percent work in agriculture,” Guindy explained.

He said 30 percent of the unemployed are university graduates, 70 percent only had a school education, and 71 percent are between the ages of 15 and 29.
