Mahalla textile company on strike over bonuses

Workers at Egypt’s major textile manufacturer declared on Wednesday an open-ended strike over the government’s decision to backtrack on disbursing a 10 percent bonus for its workers previously approved by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Employees at Misr Spinning and Weaving Company said their meeting with the governor of Gharbiya failed to resolve the standoff. Kamal al-Fayoumy, a senior leader at the company’s staff union said, “many of the company’s subsidiary plants have halted operations since the early morning and stopped their machines in protest over not receiving the bonus.”
Fayoumy told Al-Masry Al-Youm that workers were surprised when they found out their salaries for last month did not include the presidency-approved bonus, which prompted them to abstain from taking their salaries.
