Judges, activists to form ‘informal’ electoral oversight committee

A number of judges, public figures and civil society activists announced plans to form an "informal committee" to supervise this year’s parliamentary elections alongside official, government-assigned electoral oversight committees.

Nasser Amin, head of the Cairo-based Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary, said the idea had been brought up at a conference organized by the center last Tuesday. "Next week, we will choose the 28 members of the committee," he said, adding that the committee would be comprised of judges, law professors, artists and public figures.

Conference participants also called for the amendment of Article 76 of the Egyptian Constitution, saying that the article as it now stands contravened the principle of equality between citizens. They also called for limiting presidential authority to a two-term maximum.
