Israeli official in Egypt to discuss Sinai security

An Israeli military official arrived in Cairo Sunday on a private plane for a brief visit to discuss the security situation in Sinai with various Egyptian officials.

The official arrived with three companions, and Egyptian officials escorted them past the arrivals terminal to ensure secrecy, sources at Cairo International Airport said.

Airport sources declined to identify the Israeli official or his rank, but said he will tackle security on the Egypt-Israel border in light of the death of six Egyptian officers in an Israeli border raid late August, launched as Israel chased attackers who had killed eight Israelis near the southern Israeli city of Eilat.

The killings sparked a political crisis between both states, which worsened when Tel Aviv declined to give an official apology.

Protesters in Egypt then demanded the departure of the Israeli ambassador and the cancellation of the 1979 Camp David Accords, and some stormed the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.
