Islamists pledge strong presence in Friday of National Unity

The Muslim Brotherhood and the Jama'a al-Islamiya groups have announced their intention to participate “strongly” in the million-man demonstration for national unity on Friday.

"We will be strongly present in the Friday of National Unity demonstration to reject the attempts of the former regime and the remnants of the dissolved National Democratic Party to create sedition and chaos," said Mohsen Rady, a senior figure in the Brotherhood.

"We will also call for the dissolution of the local councils because they present a great threat," he added.

For his part, Safwat Abdel Ghani, a member of the Jama’a al-Islamiya's Shura Council said the group would participate in the million-man demonstration, though it was unlikely to change the situation very much.

"The position of our group is that we are against sectarian strife. We will participate effectively in order to help battle sectarian strife between Muslims and Copts," Abdel Ghani said in a statement to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
