Initiative seeks to uncover sources financing presidential campaigns

The Andalus Institute for Tolerance and Anti-Violence Studies launched an initiative calling on candidates in Egypt's presidential election to divulge their sources of campaign finance in light of growing questions about such sources.

The initiative, the National Campaign Promoting Transparency, asks the candidates to periodically present bi-monthly reports and statements of their funds that the institute would post on the electronic voting site.

“We do not cast any aspersions, but we need to know,” said Ahmed Sameh, director of the institute.

The Presidential Elections Law stipulates that a maximum of LE10 million can be spent by a candidate for campaigning in the first round of elections, and LE2 million can be spent for the runoff, to be reported in detail to the Presidential Elections Commission.
