Govt postpones new gas subsidies until after presidential race

The Egyptian government decided to postpone, until after next year’s presidential elections, implementing a new system for using coupons to sell subsidized butane gas cylinders to ration card subscribers.

An official said the project has been postponed until the government accurately determines the social classes in most need of the coupons so as to avoid wasteful subsidies.

He also said that the price of a cylinder could jump to more than LE60 on the black market if the government does not ensure that the coupons are given to the neediest. He added that the government succeeded in keeping cylinder prices down this winter with strict control measures on sales and distribution outlets.
