Fatah, Hamas plan to reconcile sometime this month

Fatah and Hamas plan to implement the reconciliation agreement they signed in Cairo on 4 May 2011 at some point between 17 and 30 January.

The Egypt-sponsored agreement seeks to end the division between the two movements, which began in 2007 with Hamas taking over the Gaza Strip and Fatah the West Bank. It provides for the formation of a national unity government between the two groups

Fatah central committee member Azzam al-Ahmed and Hamas political bureau deputy head Moussa Abu Marzouk met in Cairo on Thursday to discuss the agreement.

Ahmed said that Fatah agreed to endorse the election law for the Palestinian National Council, and form a commission for the council to register votes in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and abroad.
