Engineers Syndicate chief says Gaza reconstruction a priority

Rebuilding Palestine's Gaza Strip will be a priority for Egypt's Engineers Syndicate, said newly-elected syndicate chief Maged Kholousy.

The reconstruction of Gaza will help restore stability to the region, Kholousy, who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Egypt is one source of moral and financial support for the residents of the besieged strip amid "continuous and brutal shelling by Israeli forces," he said, adding that the country has long been a member of the Arab International Commission to Build Gaza.

The syndicate's participation in rebuilding efforts will be funded by Arab commissions, he said. The syndicate plans to work on renovation projects and provide training and building materials to Gaza residents.

Kholousy was elected syndicate head with 51,000 votes, or 50.4 percent of the 103,000 ballots cast, according to results announced Sunday. Some of his competitors are challenging those results, claiming the Muslim Brotherhood illegally manipulated the election.
