Egypt’s Sisi calls for urgent international action to stop deteriorating situation in Libya

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called for urgent action by the international community to stop the deteriorating situation in Libya and undermine the spread of extremist organizations, stressing that time is crucial.

During his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday, Sisi reviewed Egypt’s efforts in combating terrorism, said presidential spokesman Bassam Rady.

They also discussed bilateral relations and important projects between the two countries they are planning to implement in Egypt.

Lavrov confirmed Russia’s support for Egypt’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, and Moscow’s intention to continue cooperating with Egypt. Lavrov also met on Saturday with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry. He said they the fighting extremism, the situations in Libya, Syria and the Palestinian-Israeli issue, which must be resolved according to the Arab Initiative.

Sisi and Lavrov further discussed the resumption of air flights between Russian cities and the cities of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, and Egypt’s desire to see this issue resolved soon. According to Lavros, the relevant authorities in Russia are in the process of identifying the various procedures necessary to resume air traffic.

Lavrov said he hoped the flights between Russia, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada would resume as soon as possible.

In a joint news conference with Shoukry, Lavrov said that in the near future, Russian and Egyptian experts will end reinforced security at the Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh airports.

The Russian Foreign Minister arrived in Cairo on Friday for a two-day visit to Egypt and was received by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry upon arrival at Cairo International Airport.
