E-Finance Chief: Fuel smart cards to be distributed to traffic departments starting May 20

Fuel smart cards will be distributed at Cairo traffic departments starting May 20, according to Ibrahim Sarhan, head of the company E-Finance that in charge of the fuel smart card project.
So far, 3.7 million fuel smart cards have been printed.
In an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm, Sarhan said the new system aims to control the shipping and distribution of petroleum substances to end smuggling and set the value of subsidy to these products.
No quantities of petroleum substances are specified in the use of the cards, he said, explaining that consumers of gasoline and diesel oil will be able to receive any amounts they want while using the cards. He added that no price increases are expected.
Unregistered vehicles that do not have fuel cards like agricultural vehicles, tuk-tuks, motorbikes and any other vehicles can take fuel through the station cards, which will be available at all the fuel stations, instead of issuing them consumer cards, Sarhan added.
In case the consumer loses the card, another one can be issued for LE25, he said, adding that the first card is issued for free.
More than 8,000 workers of fuel stations have been trained on using the new system, Sarhan said adding that the rest of the workers receive the training periodically.
Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb earlier declared that the fuel smart card system would be applied starting mid-June.
