Cheops pyramid scanning may lead to archaeological discovery

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh el-Damati has announced that infrared scanning of the eastern side of the Cheops pyramid detected a difference in temperatures among certain stones in the first row, which may lead to an archaeological discovery.
The minister also said that scanning will be done on the Chephren pyramid, as well as two other pyramids in Dahshour, all built in the fourth dynasty.
“The pyramids are still revealing their secrets,” Damati said, adding that 2016 is the Year of the Pyramids.
The scanning is being conducted by the Cairo University Faculty of Engineering and the French Heritage Preservation Institute.
Hany Helal, coordinator of the project, said it is premature to confirm a discovery despite the differences detected in the temperatures of the stones.
A French expert pointed to the temperature differences in three other locations, wondering if this is due to geological or engineering factors.
