Activist, sister given suspended one-year imprisonment sentence

Political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and eleven others, including his sister, have been given a suspended sentence of hard labor and one year in rigorous imprisonment by the Cairo Criminal Court.
The defendants were accused of burning the electoral headquarters of former presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq.
Former Public Prosecutor Talaat Abdullah ordered re-investigating the lawsuit, although Shafiq subsequently waived it.
Prosecution had charged the suspects of joining unknown elements on 28 May 2012 in Dokki, attacking people and property, using force and setting Shafiq's headquarters on fire.
They were also charged with damaging property, theft and intimidating victims.
Abdel Fattah was referred to the same court in December on the charge of protesting in front of the Shura Council in November without permission.
