Abouel Fotouh to run as an independent in presidential poll

Presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh has announced that he intends to run independently in the presidential elections.

“I would not run on behalf of the Brotherhood even if they asked me to,” said Fotouh, who was until recently a senior figure in the Brotherhood.

In statements on Wednesday, Fotouh said he is against the Brotherhood deviating from its main mission of preaching Islam to indulge in politics.

He also asked Islamic thinker Selim al-Awa not to run in the elections.

“He is more valuable as a political thinker than a president,” he said, adding that the next president should be a “servant” of the people and not an “agent” for the United States and Israel.

The presidential hopeful said the date of the parliamentary elections should be brought forward, to be followed by the presidential elections and the writing of the constitution, in order to achieve stability in the country.

He praised the military council for siding with the revolution and successfuly managing the country's affairs.
