Abbas to visit Cairo to discuss peace process

President Hosni Mubarak will meet on Thursday with Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo to discuss Palestinian developments, including efforts to resume negotiations and advance the peace process, according to Palestinian ambassador to Cairo Barakat al-Farra.

The meeting comes in the wake of Washington's announcement to abandon pressure to halt Israeli settlement construction.

Al-Farra added that Abbas will inform Mubarak of the latest communications with the US related to American efforts to re-institute a moratorium and resume negotiations. Abbas will also relay the Palestinian Authority's initiatives in this regard.

Launched in September under American sponsorship, negotiations on settlement construction failed. Since then, Washington has unsuccessfully strove to reconcile the dispute.
