5 terrorist shelters destroyed in central Sinai, suspects arrested

Egyptian armed forces spokesperson, Tamer al-Refaei, said Saturday that army forces arrested five members suspected of supporting terrorists in central Sinai.

Refaei said in the statement that the forces destroyed shelters of Takfiri terrorist members, as well as four motorbikes.

On Friday, army forces in North Sinai killed six wanted Takfiris and injured four others. The army discovered 12 shelters of the terrorist cell, 13 motorbikes and underground tunnel beneath the border, according to Refaei.

In addition, forces uncovered three warehouses with 350 explosive devises, and destroyed seven various vehicles.

Since 2014, North Sinai has seen an increase in conflict between state security, represented in the army and police forces, and the Sinai Province—previously known as Ansar Beit el-Maqdis, who changed its name after declaring its affiliation to the Islamic State.

The group has launched several violent attacks against army and police checkpoints in North Sinai cities.

North Sinai-based state security have carried out large-scale security sweeps and military operations in response.
