30 films selected for screening at Alexandria film festival

Thirty films from Asian, European and Arab countries have been selected for screening at the 27th annual Alexandria International Film Festival for Mediterranean Countries, announced film critic and festival director Nader Adly on Tuesday.

The festival will be held from 5 to 9 October in the coastal city and will pay tribute to the 25 January revolution by screening a number of Egyptian films about it.

“This year’s festival would have been canceled if it weren’t for the efforts of members of the Egyptian Association of Film Writers and Critics, who organize the festival, as well as the support of the Culture Ministry and Alexandria Governorate," explained Adly.

In May, the Culture Ministry announced its decision to cancel the 35th annual Cairo International Film Festival due to the country’s political and economic instability, as it would have coincided with parliamentary and presidential elections previously scheduled for this fall. The ministry also feared the festival would lack an adequate number of sponsors. While the Alexandria festival will coincide with the early stages of the parliamentary elections, organizers are still planning on going through with it.

The Alexandria International Film Festival for Mediterranean Countries competition, which has been held annually since 1979, is dedicated to showcasing long feature films from Mediterranean countries.
